Re: Bone marrow biopsies: Am I a wuss?
Yeah, well...convenient or not, I'll get the drugs. If it means hanging around all day waiting, well, I have an iPad with lots of books on it, as well as about ten knitting projects. I won't be wasting any time. If I have to have someone drive me home, well, I don't go to those appointments without a family member anyway. Sister or daughter or son; even if I wanted to bebop over there on my own, I wouldn't be allowed to.

Re: Bone marrow biopsies: Am I a wuss?
I had first biopsy yesterday, under conscious sedation with a great pain drug and local. It was no problem, a bit sore now, but I'd never do this in a doctors office under just a local.
Go to the hospital and get the same anesthesia as they use for the colosnoscopies or something that sedates and kills pain. Why suffer?

Adele - Did you have Versed and a local, or something else? I am scheduled for my first BMB and I'm being given just the local first and then Versed.
Thanks for your input.

Re: Bone marrow biopsies: Am I a wuss?
My wife (Sue) is treated at Mayo in Rochester, Minn. and has had all of her biopsies done there under sedation. The first one she had (not at Mayo) was without, and she said it was horrendous. I'd push for the sedation. Good luck.

Re: Bone marrow biopsies: Am I a wuss?
Hi Diana,
You are most definitely not being a wuss! My first BMB, with just local anesthetic, was excruciatingly painful. The sensation was like a series of electric shocks from my hip to my foot. This was at my local hospital, and they simply said that they weren't equipped to do them any other way.
My second BMB was at a larger, specialised hospital. I asked for sedation, which they were happy to do, but it required much more organisation, and I ended up spending the whole day there, but it was worth it!
I remember a tugging sensation, but no pain. I remember it, but I was really "high". When I described the awful sensations from my first BMB, the doctor carrying out the second one believed it was due to "catching on the nerves", which is one of the risks.
My third BMB will definitely be with sedation again!

Re: Bone marrow biopsies: Am I a wuss?
I did not have a chance to read all the comments, but I did want to state that when my husband had his first bone marrow biopsy done, he swore no one would ever do it again. He stated it was the most painful thing he has ever had done.
The second time he had it done, the doctor scheduled it with interventional radiology. They used a form of conscious sedation. He said that one was a breeze.
