Best multiple myeloma treatments as of now?

by Terrij on Mon Mar 16, 2015 12:48 pm

There are many treatments for myeloma being researched, but that is for the future.

As of now, there are drug combinations, stem cell transplantation, and maintenance. When a patient relapses, it is trial and error to see what will work next. It seems no one can tell you what will work best for long remission.

I do realize each patient is different. I guess what I am asking is: What do you think would be the best plan? There are many knowledgeable people on this forum.

Just trying to get opinions on courses of action that are available now, especially for younger patients who have relapsed.

Hi Terrij,

Yes! There are still many treatments for people who have relapsed. I think that choosing the right therapy for an individual is an art (rather than trial and error), based on that person's response to previous treatments, the type of myeloma they have, their cytogenics, existing health problems, etc. I think most treatment centers have their own protocols that they tweak, based on the answers to these questions.

Here's a link to a conversation about the Mayo Clinic's protocol you might find interesting.

Good luck!
