Which is in your opinion the best conditioning regimen for an autologous stem cell transplant for a woman in my age? I am 70 years old. My doctors told me to chose between bortezomib + MEL140 single dose, busulphan + bortezomic +mel140 single dose, VTD+MEL140 splitted in 2 doses and finally VRD-PACE+MEL140 fractioned in 4 doses of 35 mg? What would you do?
Best regards

Re: Best conditioning regimen for a stem cell transplant?
I was 61 when I had my auto stem cell transplant (Nov. 2008), and had 4 - 21 day cycles of Velcade, Revlimid, Dex (VRD), with Very Good Partial Response (VGPR). The 5th cycle with VRD had progression. My 6th cycle was VD, with Revlimid stopped due to severe rash and swelling, but progression continued. Cycles 7 and 8 were RD, with Velcade stopped, with progression still continuing. I was given melphalan - 200 (MEL-200) in 2 doses just prior to my transplant (one day of rest prior to transplant).
The above is what I had, and is unique to my multiple myeloma and stage (IgG Kappa - stage II). It is not a suggestion you, or others, should necessarily take. What is important is what your doctor recommends. After review of all the facts, including side effects, concerning his recommendation, and any other options, a more informed decision can be made.
Although I have never managed to achieve complete remission, I have managed to have a very good quality of life for almost 5 years. Having the Myeloma Beacon as a source of information and way of asking questions is a great benefit. I would also recommend the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) as additional sources of information.
Good Luck and God Bless!
