My mum been getting a lot of pain. And did have a mole on her back that had grown. Went to docs. And they kept freezing mole and tags. But this mole they did not freeze any more. And took measurements. And pic. And sent off. Then did urine and blood tests. She has got arthritis. She is on aspirin and blood pressure tabs.
She got results yesterday (July 24, 2014). Positive of Bence Jones protein in both urine and blood. She got to go for a bone marrow biopsy. Doctor told her she needs this doing in next two weeks. And it is serious. Told her she can go on holiday abroad end of August. Cos of her results.
Does this mean she has a form of bone cancer? Is there a cure?
Scared and worried. Trying to be brave for my mum. Xx

Re: Mother has Bence Jones protein, needs bone biopsy
Thank you for introducing you and your mum and I am sorry to hear of her health development.
The hardest part of all of this is the waiting. While you are waiting, please avail yourself of the wealth of information here on The Myeloma Beacon. Many people here, like myself, are not doctors, just concerned patients who have tried to learn as much solid information as possible.
It is true that the results of your mother's test sound like they point to serious illness, but much needs to be learned first from medical tests and procedures.
The good news is that there are a lot of newer treatments available should your mother be diagnosed with myeloma.
All the best and stay close.

Re: Mother has Bence Jones protein, needs bone biopsy
Hi,
I was diagnosed with MGUS over 20 years ago at age 42. At that time, Bence Jones protein was detected.
About 10 years later I had my first treatment - thalidomide monotherapy. It was a 5-year treatment and was stopped in 2007. Since then, no treatment except for once a year I get one Zometa infusion. Still have Bence Jones protein, M-spike 1.2 g/dL, IgG 1800, and a few tiny lytic lesions were found. I am aware that sooner or later I will treatment again, but as long as I keep stable my doctor decided 7 years ago no treatment, only observation.
Every multiple myeloma patient case is individual and follows its own path. Since I was diagnosed there has been so much progress. I strongly believe that positive thinking has helped me.
Best wishes for your mother! Let me know if I can provide any further advice.
