Bence Jones Kappa Light Chain & Symptoms of Kidney Damage

I just turned in a 24hr urine; but my oncologist will be out of town until week after next so I will not know the outcome. My question is what are symptoms of kidney damage with Bence Jones. My urine has been smelling very strongly of protein for the last couple of weeks. I am drinking 64oz. of H2O most days. I am just curious about the smell and the fact I don't seem to be able to drink it away. I don't take nsaids.

Dear lpatterson,

I am not aware of a specific odor of light chains in the urine, although I suspect I have not quizzed my patients carefully enough about this. What I can say is that large amounts of any kind of protein in the urine (light chains, albumin, or otherwise) can make your urine very foamy and frothy -- more than the usual baseline. The only other symptoms of light chains in the urine would be dictated by whether or not the kidney function is affected. Severe kidney damage can cause fatigue, nausea, lethargy, decreased mental alertness.
