Balance issues with MGUS?

by chrismcd99 on Thu Jan 12, 2017 1:25 pm

Hi everyone,

My name is Chris. I was diagnosed with MGUS the end of October. The reason I started seeing a neurologist was balance issues I was having. After asking lots of questions, she told me she was running tests for multiple myeloma. I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet, a little in my hands.

I was just wondering how common it is to have balance issues with either MGUS or multiple myeloma.

Hi Chris,

I was diagnosed with MGUS in August. I also have peripheral neuropathy, but I have not experienced balance issues. I get tingling in my shins, muscle twitching all over, and I've also experienced weakness in my legs. I'm still trying to figure out what's going on. It's a grind. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone and I wish you well.

Are you IgG? What was your M-spike? Do you have any other symptoms?

Good luck,
Jon

Hi Jon. Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I get the tingling and numbness in my feet. Makes it hard to walk sometimes. Yes, I am IgG. My m spike was low - 0.3 g/dL (3 g/l). I am considered low risk. I also have weakness in my legs sometimes. When I am walking, sometimes I will all of a sudden fall to the side. I just didn't know if anyone else here has had that problem.

Hi Chris,

I do not think it is common to have balance issues with MGUS. However, having said that, I can also state that I did experience balance problems prior to the onset of my MGUS.

In my case, I had developed a series of autoimmune related disorders, one of which affected my balance and hearing systems. I would veer when walking, feel as if I were on a boat at sea, have the sensation of ear fullness, suffer loud tinnitus, and experience debilitating vertigo attacks. This condition lasted many years.

I post with the name Wobbles because I had so much trouble with balance.

I wish you luck with getting to the bottom of your balance problems.

Joe

Hi Chris,

I have IgM MGUS (diagnosed August 2016) and also peripheral neuropathy, which I take gabapentin for. Some medications like gabapentin can cause balance issues, and also if the peripheral neuropathy is severe enough, just the walking along can cause you to stumble and loose your balance.

My MGUS has not progressed as far as I know. Go for more scans and blood work next week.

Thank you for your replies. Yes, after walking for about 15-20 minutes, I start having trouble walking. I start veering to the side, having balance problems. My feet start tingling (feels like vibrating) really bad.

Good luck with your tests, I hope results come out okay.

Chris,

I read your post. I too get dizzy and wobbly on my feet . It is coming from my ear feeling stuffed. It is not related to MGUS. It is for me more of an ear issue. Maybe a ENT specialist can help you. My Eustachian tube in my ear swells, and my ear feels clogged. I take Nasonex (mometasone) sometimes, and it reduces the inflammation. I would look into ear problems, they often affect balance.

Best wishes to you on your journey.
