Has anyone developed avascular necrosis after multiple myeloma treatment? I just found out I have it in my hips, probably from the steroids.
The ortho says I need a hip replacement, but I am wondering how long I can hold off and what effect the multiple myeloma will have on a total hip replacement?

Re: Avascular necrosis in the hip
If you have avascular necrosis of the hip, pain with standing and walking, pain at rest, etc, it would be better not to wait to have the surgery. The avascular necrosis means that the bone and other structures within the hip joint aren't receiving their blood supply. That means that the bone isn't getting the nutrients that it needs to stay alive and will die. Not a good condition.
I had a knee replacement 1 1/2 years ago. The recovery was a little harder than any of the surgeries I had prior to myeloma, but my knee is quite good now. Talk with your oncologist about the surgery because you will probably have to stop all of your medications for a few weeks at least.
The best to you in your decision,
Nancy in Phila

Thanks Nancy, You and I are neighbors! I live in the Philly area and go to Dr Stadtmauer at Penn for my smoldering myeloma.
Where did you have your knee replacement? I've heard that knees are harder to recover from than hips.
Stay dry!
