Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Poem

I am on Day 18 of my ASCT [autologous stem cell transplant] and was discharged from the hospital yesterday. My Mom wrote a poem where each day I could rip off a paper to uncover the next line (akin to an Advent calendar).

I am sharing to hopefully give everyone going through this process something to smile about :D

1. Melphalan is a powerful drug
2. To beat this cancer they gave me a slug
3. It went to work so very quick
4. It made my stomach ultra-sick
5. Then it began to do its stuff
6. It turned my marrow into mush
7. And so now I am neutropenic
8. And add to that my view's not scenic
9. Mucositis is next and that's not fun
10. But cancer cells will be on the run
11. All this IV fluid is making me swell
12. No wonder it is that I feel like hell
13. Just wait - white cells their charge will mount
14. And my counts will go up - on that you can count
15. Visitors please note when you appear

And congratulations on your discharge! I hope your recovery continues to go well.

When you get a chance, please tell us more about how the transplant went. How did it compare to what you expected?

I am Day +113 post transplant. Your poem brought back such memories from last November at Moffitt Cancer Hospital in Tampa, Florida. My GI is still not right from the melphalan; I'm trying different probiotics. I have terrible flatulence and some "chemobrain".

I'm getting stronger though; I have to.
