Re: Asymptomatic Myeloma Hemoglobin count

My wife was diagnosed with SMM last August. So far, everything seemed to be OK with the exception of HGB, which was at 10.5, and WBC, which was also below the lower limit, at her last test a few weeks ago. Two previous tests, the last one being performed in October, showed that her haptoglobin was less than 6. I looked into the indication of low haptoglobin and found that it is a sign of RBC being destroyed prematurely, which could also contribute to low HBG. It may just be the third cause of anemia listed in Dr. Hofmeister's comment.

Before any treatment commences because of my wife's anemia, I wanted to rule out anything other than multiple myeloma that's causing the low HBG. Her oncologist was not alarmed by this result. But I think we should absolutely be sure multiple myeloma is the cause, not anything else, before she starts to receive treatment. I am grateful for any insights that you might provide. Thanks!
