My oncologist tells me that it is unknown what causes multiple myeloma.
I have had acrylic nails since the 1980's. The first part of December 2016, I decided to have gel polish put on my nails instead. Of course, the salon uses acetone and that electric file between polish changes. I had the third polish done a week ago. Two days later, I broke out in hives and could not stop the itching despite liberal amounts of cortisone cream and Benadryl (diphenhydramine).
So of course I did research, starting with reactions to Velcade. Even though I have been on it since February 2016 and my dosage is now half what it was, I thought maybe that was my issue. Not.
However, I did find some information on the Internet that acknowledged that no reason is given for the cause of multiple myeloma, BUT that nail products are detrimental to the technicians in the salons AND that there is a higher incidence of multiple myeloma and lymphoma with techs and individuals who have the fake nails – especially the gel polish.
I know you can't believe everything you read on the internet, but I had nothing to lose, so I soaked the gel polish off yesterday, scrubbed my fingernails really good with antibacterial soap, and put coconut oil on them every few minutes because they are so damaged and thin.
NO itching last night.
This isn't an "itching" forum, but I wanted to share the multiple myeloma information with you. I can't help but wonder if I opened the door to multiple myeloma way back in 1980 or sometime thereafter. Having nice looking nails isn't worth it. I am in remission and won't take a chance on anything that might cause a relapse.

Re: Artificial nails and multiple myeloma
Hi Brenda,
It's good of you to inform us of this. Truly, these days we are swimming in a sea of chemicals. Perhaps the plastics that are everywhere are also a factor, and the pesticides we take in with our produce, and the hormones with meat, and what we wash our houses with and what we wash ourselves with.
Not to mention the endless exhaust on our roads the world over. My state is on a "no-idling" campaign.
On and on. Read labels, use natural products whenever you can.
