anxious due to possible diagnosis of multiple myeloma
I was admitted to hospital on Tuesday with severe lower back pain and bladder dysfunction( I had discectomy and decompression as emergency 6 years ago due to blader and bowel dysfunction)I had urgent MRI which showed some herniation of discs and? Inflammatory spinal arthritis but the Consultant radioligists raised the possibility of Myeloma and sent the scan to be reviewed by the Spinal team at the specialist centre and they agreed. I had bloods done today and urine for Benz Jones inflammatory markers are raised but other bloods have not returned yet. I am 44 and very anxious. I was so shocked I didn't ask what it was that raised the concern of multiple myeloma. on MRI. I have longstanding nerve damage in my lower right limb outer aspect but this has progressed since Sunday to big toe and top of footAny advise would be great they dischargedme this morning pending the results. On pain relief and crutches .Thank you. Just need advice what to ask what to do. Martina.
Re: anxious due to possible diagnosis of multiple myeloma
Hi Martina,
I don't know enough about the Bence Jones markers to really know if slightly elevated is an issue. The flag for my myeloma was anemia which caused a good doctor to do follow up blood work. That found elevated protein levels and then a further break down of the proteins was done. The blood work showed an M-spike which indicates a problem. Confirmation was done through a bone marrow biopsy.
So, unfortunately, I don't have answers for you, but hopefully you won't have to wait long. Also, the prognosis that you see on the internet is usually more pessimistic than what's actually happening for most people with myeloma today. For many myeloma patients, the disease can be controlled for many years.
I hope you get some answers soon and feel better. Wishing you good outcomes!

Re: anxious due to possible diagnosis of multiple myeloma
Dear Anxious..
My husband was diagnoised with multiple myeloma/Bence Jones in July of 1912 and so I have done a lot of research on this cancer. The Bence Jones version is a little more tricky to diagnois so a urine test is taken.....It can detect the " BJMm", because this version sticks to the kidney....
If you are diagonised with multiple myeloma, the most important thing you can do for yourself is to find an excellent support group.......I strongly recommend The International or National Multiple Myeloma Foundation. They helped us so much...... They can answere so many of your questions and they are equipped with a list of the most repetable physicians, support groups in your area and so much more. You can find them online.
It isn't easy when dealing with anything so serious , but just know that you are not alone....You are in my prayers!!

Re: anxious due to possible diagnosis of multiple myeloma
I have Bence Jones and your blood work will give you more information. BJ clogs the kidneys and raises creatine levels. I suspect that will be the tip off if you indeed suffer from BJ.

Re: anxious due to possible diagnosis of multiple myeloma
Thank you everyone. I am still waiting for my blood test results but am booked in to see my GP next Monday. she will hopefully chase things up. The pain in my back is quite bad but I am using crutches to relieve the pressure. Your support and prayers are keeping me going. I have 3 children 18, 15 and 4 and as well as working full time I care for my Mum who has mixed Dementia. so very stressful not knowing. I will keep you posted with the results.Thank you Martina xx
