Hi.
Wow, I finally found someone who might be interested in what I have found! Low carb seems to be working.
I was diagnosed almost 2 years ago with multiple myeloma and light chain deposition disease. I had the full chemo and then had a stem cell replacement / bone marrow transplant in Nov 2012. I take Revlimid every other day and have my blood tested every month - every month my cancer numbers (the kappa light chains) were gradually going up.
At a doctors appointment March 23, 2014, I asked my doctor about a diet to prolong remission. He told me to eat an Atkins/diabetic diet - low carb - aim for low and steady blood sugar. So, I started trying to figure out what a diabetic diet was but there are a lot of different opinions. I finally just bought a blood glucose meter and started taking my own blood sugar readings several times per day to see what affected my blood sugar. I take it when I wake, before my meals, and 2 hours after my meals, and I am trying to keep my blood glucose between 85-105.
To make a long story short, the results on my blood work after just one month of trying to follow this were great. April 5th my light chains were down to what they were over a year ago, down to within just a few months after my BMT/SCR, my ratio of lambda and kappa's was almost exactly 1 (which is normal!)
My kidney function was the best since being diagnosed with cancer. Light chains had destroyed 75% of my kidneys (creatinine was down to 1.45 from a high of 3.1). I had been out of normal on 14 areas of my blood work, but 4 of them came into the normal range, and that is in addition to the light chains and creatinine dropping so dramatically.
My doctor said that since I was doing so well, he would wait 8 weeks for next appointment. I am disappointed because I really want to see if I continue to improve or if I keep that improvement!
Ask more if you are interested. Like I said, I have told several people with cancer and no one has shown much interest.
