Anti-myeloma diet plan (food, juices, recipes)

by tsetiadi on Sat May 17, 2014 11:15 pm

All,

For my mum that has been diagnosed with myeloma, doctors are not giving her any treatment at this stage so I decided to look around for some unconventional therapy to slow down the development or eliminate it all together.

My research indicate plant-based vegan diet has cured some cancer but I am unsure whether it really works for myeloma patients? Be great if anyone can please share with me some recipes or diets they believe could be helpful.

Thanks and any responses appreciated :-)
Tessa

I assume if your Mom is not being treated, that she is either diagnosed with MGUS or smoldering myeloma, right?

Hi there, would be great to see what diets may work. We went through juicing, vegan, raw, ketogenic, just to name a few. And still are searching for the right one. Everyone is different thus there is no universal diet that would fit each.

Hi.

Wow, I finally found someone who might be interested in what I have found! Low carb seems to be working.

I was diagnosed almost 2 years ago with multiple myeloma and light chain deposition disease. I had the full chemo and then had a stem cell replacement / bone marrow transplant in Nov 2012. I take Revlimid every other day and have my blood tested every month - every month my cancer numbers (the kappa light chains) were gradually going up.

At a doctors appointment March 23, 2014, I asked my doctor about a diet to prolong remission. He told me to eat an Atkins/diabetic diet - low carb - aim for low and steady blood sugar. So, I started trying to figure out what a diabetic diet was but there are a lot of different opinions. I finally just bought a blood glucose meter and started taking my own blood sugar readings several times per day to see what affected my blood sugar. I take it when I wake, before my meals, and 2 hours after my meals, and I am trying to keep my blood glucose between 85-105.

To make a long story short, the results on my blood work after just one month of trying to follow this were great. April 5th my light chains were down to what they were over a year ago, down to within just a few months after my BMT/SCR, my ratio of lambda and kappa's was almost exactly 1 (which is normal!)

My kidney function was the best since being diagnosed with cancer. Light chains had destroyed 75% of my kidneys (creatinine was down to 1.45 from a high of 3.1). I had been out of normal on 14 areas of my blood work, but 4 of them came into the normal range, and that is in addition to the light chains and creatinine dropping so dramatically.

My doctor said that since I was doing so well, he would wait 8 weeks for next appointment. I am disappointed because I really want to see if I continue to improve or if I keep that improvement!

Ask more if you are interested. Like I said, I have told several people with cancer and no one has shown much interest.

I was diagnosed as "high risk smoldering" last fall and in November my doctor was bracing me for the likely scenario of having to start treatment at the start of this year since my free light chain ratio popped up over 100. He figured it was a steady upward trend that we happened to catch while I was asymptomatic. As it turns out, my free light chain ratio dropped back down and has been fluctuating. Evidently, fluctuation is not unusual, and I'm no longer panicked about my "myeloma defining event."

Here's my question:

Does anyone know how much it's possible to control this beast with diet?

My doctor kind of laughed at this question and said that angiogenesis was the hot topic in the 1970's; that if kale could cure cancer, we'd surely know by now. And I'm sure that's true but here's the thing:

I've been eating almost purely anti-angiogenic and nutrient-rich "superfoods" since November. And here we are in June and my doctor no longer thinks I'm "high risk" since that was based mostly on the free light chain ratio problem.

I've always eaten a healthy diet, but now I'm 90% plant-based, organic, drink veggie smoothies for breakfast every morning that I make fresh in my Vitamix, etc. I figure that, even if it doesn't help with smoldering multiple myeloma, it certainly can't be a bad thing!

Does anyone have any information about altering diet? Do you think it can affect lab work, progression, anything at all?

I feel like I'm my own little "clinical trial of one."

Hehe, this is such a difficult topic.

My doctor (and I tend to agree with him) has the opinion: if 3 months of Velcade salvage therapy don't work, don't expect turmeric to!

To add my 2 cents:

I was diagnosed with smoldering myeloma in 2014. My M-spike was 1.5 g/dL (15 g/l), free light chain ratio 10.0, bone marrow 20%. Today M-spike 1.8 g/dL, free light chain ratio fluctuates between 8.9 and 10. I take no supplements except vitamin D, which I am low on. I take my thyroid medications and pain medications for my back (I had a spinal fusion in 2013). I eat a very healthy diet, including meat, and like a cocktail before dinner. I just turned 80 and, other than back problems, feel great. I've lived in California, where I saw many fad diets, including carrot juice (orange babies), meant to cure and prevent just about anything, so I am rather anti-supplements and fad diets. I am not suggesting anyone follow my example. I believe whatever works for you is what you should follow.

Love reading all the comments,
Marti
