My sister had neuropathy when on Velcade during induction. This is why her oncologist put her on Revlimid maintenance post transplant in the hope it won’t cause neuropathy. After Velcade was discontinued, the neuropathy symptoms improved, but now after one cycle of Revlimid the peripheral neuropathy symptoms are back.
My sister is considering taking alpha lipoic acid (ALA). She has read somewhere that in order to get the full benefit out of it, alpha lipoic acid has to be taken with something else, but she does not remember what that was.
Also, we have read here in the forum that it is advised not to take ALA on the days of Velcade infusions. What about Revlimid? Any special considerations for if and how to take ALA when on Revlimid maintenance?

Re: Alpha lipoic acid & Revlimid maintenance
My wife takes 600 mg daily, NOT taken on treatment day. Her consulting multiple myeloma specialist has recommended this from the start of treatment. Additionally, he recommends no vitamin C containing products on Velcade days. On Velcade and Medrol (methylprednisolone) maintenance now along with Zometa. No peripheral neuropathy symptoms yet.

Re: Alpha lipoic acid & Revlimid maintenance
Hi Brett
Thank you for your input. Yes, with Velcade one can skip alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on the day of infusion. I am wondering how ALA interacts with Revlimid, which is taken daily for 21 days out of a 28 day cycle. Is it OK to take it with Revlimid? If not, is it effective if taken for only 1 week a month?

Re: Alpha lipoic acid & Revlimid maintenance
I have taken ALA (250 mg twice daily) from the beginning at the suggestion of my specialist (along with a few other suggested supplements, most notably acetyl-L-carnitine (500 mg twice daily) to guard against neuropathy. I don't recall any mention of ALA needing to be taken with something else.
I do not take it on Velcade days, but did take it throughout my induction therapy which included Revlimid – again, at my specialist's recommendation.
