Wondering if anyone can recommend any remedies/meds that helped in alleviating mouth sores.
My mother is in the ICU recovering (hopefully) from septic shock and pneumonia. It seems as though one of the major impediments to her getting better is her inability to eat. She has severe thrush (is on fluconazole and nystatin) and horrendous sores and is basically incapable of eating anything.
Any suggestions or tips?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Alleviating mouth sores post-chemo
I am 4 1/2 years post transplant and have been using Biotene PBF since leaving the hospital, and it works.

My pharmacist made up a mouthwash with lidocaine and Malox. It numbs the pain. Just swish & spit.

Re: Alleviating mouth sores post-chemo
There's a concoction known as "magic mouthwash" that helps with chemo-related mouth sores. The mixture that Jonib mentioned above includes two types of ingredients often found in "magic" mix.
The hospital where your mother is at probably knows about the mixture and where to get pre-mixed versions of it (or how to create it themselves in their pharmacy).
A number of people here have magic mouthwash during the stem cell transplantation process and found it to be very helpful.
If for some reason the hospital your mother is at does not know about it, just have them do an Internet search on "magic mouthwash". There is lots of information about it out there.
Hope your mother's condition continues to improve.

Try NeutraSal. It is avaiable via a prescription from your oncologist.
It is a powder that you mix using the supplied container and rinse in your mouth for two minutes using the supplied timer.
It works great and very quickly.
