Allergic reaction to Velcade or Revlimid

by mmforum on Thu Mar 29, 2012 6:38 pm

I was recently diagnosed with multiple myeloma and have begun Velcade, dexamethasone, Revlimid treatments. The Velcade is a subQ shot and the others are taken orally.

After 3 treatments, I have developed a rash on the inside of my upper arms and both sides. My doctor has suspended treatment until we can clear up the rash and determine the cause.

Has anyone had such a quick allergic reaction to either Velcade or Revlimid? If yes, were you able to continue with these drugs after the rash cleared or were other medicines prescribed?

Go to the "resource" tab and select Revlimid. You will note that rashes are a common side effect. A rather serious rash type symptom called steven-Johnson syndrome although rare can be life threatening. Sub q Velcade can cause a local rash around the injection site but that is not what you are describing.

Ron, thanks for the information. I am backing off treatment for 2 weeks so I can rid myself of the rash. The oncologist will then add 1 drug at a time to determine which is causing the reaction. My dermatologist thinks Velcade is the problem based upon the nature of the rash.

My mom was given Revlimid as a first treatment and it caused posterior reversible encephalitis. The doc told us it was a rare side effect.

It manifested in hallucinations and limb jerking and other side effects.

Again, it was the 0.01% chance of it happening. That just our funny line. I would just let those around you know to look for those signs.

Good luck, I hear several really good stories about Revlimid. It just wasn't right for us. ;)

I started treatment this month. At the end of 2 weeks (after 3 Velcade shots), I developed a severe drug allergy. Dermatologists agreed it was the Velcade. I'm now on prednisone for 13 days. Still on acyclovor for a month (then stop), full dose daily aspirin, Revlimid, Decadron [dexamethasone] once a week.

I will be seeing the oncologist in a week ... don't know if any of the above will change.

I am kind of freaking out right now. I just got my 4th shot of Velcade today at Sloan Kettering. I have had redness only at the site of the shot (shot #3), but tonight after undressed, I noticed a terrible rash from my breasts to my stomach, then my ENTIRE back from shoulders to upper butt. About 2 hours later, the rash spread to my inner arms and a little on my legs, so now it's full body.

I don't know if it's from Velcade or all of my other medications. I've done Velcade 4x, I take dexamethasone 6 times per cycle (this is my first cycle - trying to figure this all out), and I take Revlimid every night (for the last 11 days). Luckily, I will be stopping Revlimid (off-cycle) in just a few days. I hope this clears up. I'm very scared this could be life-threatening as I read above.

Could this be from any other drugs I'm on? I am on:
Velcade (chemo Shot)
Revlimid (chemo)
Dexamethasone (steroid - take on day of Velcade shot and day after; just lowered dose)

Omeprazole (Prilosec anti-heartburn)
Asprin (blood thinner)
Flucanazole (anti-fungal)
Acyclovir (anti-viral)
Bactrim/Sulf (anti-infections) - take on Mon, Wed & Fri
Colase and senna (for constipation from dex and Revlimid)

After about six months on RVD, my husband suddenly developed a bright red rash over most of his torso, front, back, thighs. Because it happened late at night, I immediately had him take a Claritin, and we consulted various experts over the next few days.

When the rash didn't go away quickly, we saw a dermatologist who, in consultation with the multiple myeloma specialist, gave him a 10-day tapering course of prednisone, switched him to Zyrtec in addition to prescribing a second, more sedating antihistamine to take at night. He was further given a steroid cream to use on the rash where it itched. We think the rash was a reaction to the Revlimid.

It's now two weeks since the rash first erupted and it's almost gone. He has been told NOT to resume the Revlimid at this time, but simply get the weekly 40 mg. dex and the Velcade shot, plus the monthly Zolmeta infusion.

We are likely headed for an ASCT later this summer or early fall. He has the 17p deletion and we are in a clinical trial at Hopkins.

These allergic reactions are quite scary

Best of luck!

I am thankful that I found this site, as I am having increasing rash from my back hair line all the
way down my back. I had my 3rd Velcade injection into my abdomen almost 2 weeks ago, and the rash continues to be more itchy. I am concerned about my next injection on Tuesday and the
rash increasing more. I will call in my concerns on Monday.

I appreciate all the information fellow site users have shared. Benadryl seemed to help 2 weeks ago. Far less now.

Velcade was attacking my nervous system. Oncologist stopped Velcade and I am now on Revlimid and dex. He sees me once a month. Pain is a big problem and about four hours after Revlimid, I get dizzy and have difficulty getting around.
