Acid reflux - due to multiple myeloma or treatment?

Twice since my diagnosis in April 2015 I've experienced what seems to be mild acid reflux issues.

The two events are nearly one year apart and came at different stages of the cancer and at different stages of my mental heath and anxiety levels, which were substantially high for several months following diagnosis. The second event follows several cycles of induction chemo therapy (but during my off week from chemo drugs). During treatment, my primary side effect Is diarrhea a few days following IV carfilzomib (Kyprolis), which I receive with Zofran (ondansetron). I pretreat days ahead with stool softener and I'm regular in a day. I'm at a major crossroads preparing for my autologous stem cell transplant. My anxiety is a different nature than a year ago, but there is anxiety.

Another symptom that is part of both events is a localized sore in the right side of my throat. It is not rough or scratchy. It seems very localized. I can't judge size, but it does not cause any blockage or impact swallowing, but there is minor pain as items press the sore location. Warm fluids help relieve the discomfort. Two days ago I had fairly strong heart burn. Release of pressure by burps and passing gas gave relief. The throat sore seemed to move lower and less painful.

The common symptoms present at night. Hiccups, feeling of acid moving up (only once recently did a small amount make it to my mouth). I take 20 mg of omeprazole (Prilosec, Losec) and get relief.

I'm no doctor. I'm looking at the common elements of the events and looking for ways to deal with it. To know about if it may create a risk factor in future treatments.

I don't under report to doctor, but i haven't woven this package of events in a single conspiracy theory.

Are you taking dex? It gave me reflux into my esophagus which resulted in a hoarse voice lasting about 4-6 months after I stopped taking it. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole were useless, but I found the minty Gaviscon suckable pills helped. Also, try raising the head of your bed about 9 inches with timber. It makes sleeping a bit uncomfortable at first, but you get used to it!

Yes, I'm taking dex and that would line up with the current timing. Thanks for the tip on Gaviscon. I'll give that a try. It also hits worse at night so raising my head is a good idea and we have an adjustable bed.

I get acid reflux 1-2 times a month, usually the day or day after I take dex. If I try to eat or drink less on those days, I can usually avoid the acid reflux.

If you're taking dex, that might be part of the reason you're getting acid reflux.
