Above normal kappa free light chain - meaning?

by Min on Thu Nov 26, 2015 9:57 am

Hi all,

I am really confused and would really appreciate your help with trying to understand what's going on. I have been struggling with weakness, fatigue, dizziness, fibromyalgia carvenoma haemorraghing, hormonal issues and was told to do some free light chain test.

I got a reading of 27 for serum kappa free light chains which is higher than the normal range (normal range 3.30-19.40). The serum lambda free light chain and serum kappa lambda ratio are in the normal range. In term of urine free light chains, the urine kappa lambda ratio is 14.52 higher than normal range (2.04-10.37).

Does anybody know what this all means?

Min

Hi Min,

Welcome to the forum. You might want to consider registering on this site so that folks can have an easier time tracking your situation and answering your questions.

If a doctor suspected a plasma cell disorder such as multiple myeloma , he/she likely didn't order a serum free light chain assay without also ordering a couple of other tests such as a serum immunofixation and a serum protein electrophoresis test. Do you have those test results?

Several things can cause a free light chain number to be slightly elevated, so you can't look at just the free light chain numbers in isolation.

I assume that you will be meeting with your doc in the near future and can discuss your results with him/her?
