Abnormal Blood Cells

by jsnow527 on Wed Jun 16, 2010 8:26 pm

I had blood testing done last Friday and the CBC results came back with notes regarding abnormal red and white blood cells. Both my WBC and platelet counts are still low from my last round of treatment. Hemoglobin is still pretty good.

Under RBC Morphology the results were: "Rare Poikilocytosis" (poikilocytosis is a general term for abnormally shaped red blood cells).

Under WBC Morphology the results were: "1+ Reactive Lymphs". My understanding is that reactive lymphs are lymphocytes that are enlarged due to some stimulus.

This is the first time that my blood tests have come back with these abnormalities. Has anyone else had similar results? Any idea what it might mean? I will have another set of blood tests done tomorrow and see the dr. on Friday.

Thanks for any input you might have,
Janet

Hi Janet,

Since your doctor's appointment is tomorrow, we reached out to a myeloma specialist who was able to provide a quick response to your question.

Dr. S. Vincent Rajkumar from the Mayo Clinic said, "These are very common abnormalities and not of concern."

We're happy to hear these abnormalities aren't serious and wish you all the best with your latest tests.

Thanks for your response.

I received my test results today and my urine protein and kappa light chains have gone down substantially. At least I got a good response from the treatment even though it was hard on my system.
