Hi Everyone,
I have been having quite a bit of discomfort in my abdomen. Its hard to say exactly where it is. I mentioned it to my hematologist-oncologist last week, and he didn't seemed concerned that it was related to my smoldering multiple myeloma. I have had it for a month or so, but now it is getting annoying. I am going to see my PCP Wednesday to see what he thinks.
Does anyone know if this might be related to multiple myeloma in anyway?
Lots of back and rib pain too. Even though a recent MRI of my thorax and x-rays of ribs showed nothing.
Prayers to all

Re: Abdominal pain with multiple myeloma
Hi Art,
On a scale of 1-10 where would you rank 'quite a bit of discomfort'?
Did discomfort increase over a month to evolve to annoying?
Is the discomfort more pronounced before or after meals? Is it transient or does not subside?
Could it be regularity? Lo fiber diet?
Is there a time of day, morning/evening, when discomfort is greater?
Is your abdomen bloated?
If you drink coffee or tea, do you notice if that increases discomfort?
Are you taking any drugs?
Or over the counter, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, aspirin, etc? These are known to irritate the stomach.

Re: Abdominal pain with multiple myeloma
Hi suzirose,
I would rank the discomfort as a 6. Not horrible pain, just annoying, and yes it has evolved. It was intermittent but now seems to be more persistent. I have never had a problem with irregularity and seems to be independent of meals or my morning coffee. I take nothing other that spirulina, curcumin, and a multivitamin. It started before I started taking the spirulina and curcumin. I do not have obvious bloating, but I feel bloated. It seems to be more when I sit than stand. When driving, it seems to bother me. I had a very similar discomfort when I had appendicitis several years ago.

Re: Abdominal pain with multiple myeloma
Here is my best guess: it could be gallstones. Have your gall bladder checked.
Curcumin exacerbates gallstones by stimulating gall bladder contraction. If the stone is too big to pass thru the duct, it creates pain and considerable discomfort, and stone blockage can lead to pancreatitis, backing up bile ducts to liver and pancreas.

Re: Abdominal pain with multiple myeloma
Thanks for your input suzierose. I will find out soon enough I guess. Thankfully the doctor I'm going to see is the one that got me on the right track with my smoldering multiple myeloma. I saw him after another missed all of the signs, he is very good. I hope you are feeling well

Re: Abdominal pain with multiple myeloma
Hi Art,
Suzierose's comment on gallstones got me to thinking prior to my being diagnosed with multiple myeloma I had kidney stones (2, one from each kidney). The one on the right side was too large to pass and it blocked the output from that kidney, causing the urine to back up into the kidney. It caused me to have a very flat agonizing pain (not sharp, but intense at times). I would rate the pain as ranging from a 2 or 3 to an 8 or 9 at times. It kind of came in waves. At the 2/3 level I was functional (drove home from work), but at the upper level I was unable to do anything.
My urologist put in a stent between my kidney and my bladder (pushing the stone to one side). I had immediate relief. Went back about 2 weeks later and he blew the stone up with a laser beam. It came out like pieces of fine sand.
The stone on the left side was small enough to pass. Did not cause the same pain as the other one. Just a momentary real sharp stabbing pain as it passed, and then it was gone . I screened my urine and got enough of the first stone for them to determine the composition and they put me on a restricted diet. No more stones.
These stones showed up on x-rays.
Don't know if any of this pertains to your problem, but it's something to think about.

Thanks Nipon. I am going to the doctor tomorrow. The last couple of days, the discomfort has not been as bad. It's back to intermittent again and not as intense. It's just that I'm so aware of everything now due to my smoldering myeloma. A year ago I probably would have ignored it.
Thanks again,
Art

Re: Abdominal pain with multiple myeloma
This suggestion is probably too late for your doctor appointment, but I developed several hernias in that area, but that was due to my myeloma treatment. In your case, that still could be something to check for. I had surgery, after the world checked off my ability to withstand it. Obviously, I did. Just my suggestion for you.
Re: Abdominal pain with multiple myeloma
Hi Art,
I was rushed off 27 December 2017 with shortness of breath. In hospital a chest x-ray revealed a collapsed lung. This was due to fluid in lung cavity. This was in turn biopsied to reveal multiple myeloma.
Big Shock.
All through that year I had a lot of antibiotics for a continual sore throat. Also bone pain in right chest through to back for a longer time. I thought just bone pain. I can put up with it. Now, it's time to treat the myeloma. Still shortness of breath. And a swollen belly which comes and goes. It's like wins are in there. Pain too.
That's my story. Prayers too.
