A SHOUT OUT to Shain, Cohen and Voorhees!!

by suzierose on Mon Dec 05, 2011 3:14 pm

I know we have many multiple myeloma experts on this site with outstanding credentials/expertise and this in no way fails to acknowledge them.

However, I want to say
That you three have been exemplary!!
I know that you all are busy, clinical trials, conferences, tumor boards, professional meetings, PLUS have heavy patient loads and your time is precious.

Nevertheless, you provide detailed and thorough responses that are exceptionally helpful.

So this shout out is to say...I sincerely appreciate all that you do in taking the time to post and provide us with meaningful explanations and answers that include your expertise. Your answers are thorough, in-depth and most of all provide clinical signifiance in a way that patients can understand....that pesky 'bedside manner' you learned in med school lol :D

There are no words to express how your posts make such a huge difference in my life and I suspect for many other patients here as well as I deal with the unknowns.

Just wanted all of you to know your posts are valued and help tremendously as we navigate the difficult terrain of this complex and onerous disease.

Thank you so much.
Is there a word bigger than thanks?!...how about PRAISE!!

Yes, that is what shout out means..PRAISE...you all have earned it and what better time than this holiday season to tell you so?

Wishing you blessings in the spirt of the season and sending tremendous gratitude to say your participation in this forum makes a difference in spite of the long hours you put in as well as acknowleding that the expertise you have worked hard to garner DOES make a difference in many lives!! Please continue to master your speciality as it does change lives.

While I know there is no greater recognition than by your peers.

Please Keep striving and thriving here !! Your brilliance, hard work and extra effort has not gone unrecognized by this patient even if I am not your medical/clinical peer.

Love you guys!!

I agree with you completely, suzierose.

The only thing I would add is to thank Dr. Libby as well.

I think Dr. Libby was the first doctor regularly answering questions here in the forum, and I've learned a huge amount from his postings. Just like I've learned a lot from what Dr. Voorhees, Dr. Shain, and Dr. Cohen have posted.

Thank you!

Thank you, Lisa B, for those kind words. All of us here at The Beacon appreciate that sort of feedback.

And, of course, the Beacon Medical Advisors are making a tremendous contribution here at The Beacon. Reading their postings regularly is probably one of the best ways to do a "continuing education program" in multiple myeloma for patients and caregivers.

Let me add, though, that we also should thank the Beacon's sponsors -- Memorial Sloan-Kettering and the John Theurer Center. They help keep the lights on around here.

These two organizations are demonstrating with concrete action -- not just marketing slogans -- that they do care about myeloma patients and caregivers, and that they do care about there being an independent voice educating and watching out for the myeloma community.

Thanks very much for this wonderful website. All the authors, medical advisers, editorial staff and sponsors should give themselves a pat on the back!! Since multiple myeloma is quite a rare diagnosis, an information website is all the more valuable, to allow people to share across wide distances! I really appreciate the opportunity to ask questions and post comments.

Thank You John Theurer Cancer Center, for generously sponsoring this site, and for all your continued excellence in the field of multiple myeloma:

"The John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the nation’s top 50 best hospitals for cancer, will present research updates and clinical trial results of 31 cutting-edge studies at the 2011 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting in San Diego from December 10-13.

More than half of the John Theurer Cancer Center presentations showcased at the ASH Annual Meeting have been considered exceptionally significant and will be presented orally, including Phase I and Phase II studies, multi-center, international trials in collaboration with leading cancer institutions such as the National Cancer Institute, MD Anderson, Dana-Farber, Mayo Clinic, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

“Personalizing therapies will certainly play a growing role in the practice of oncology,” said Andre Goy, M.D., M.S., chairman and director, chief of lymphoma, and director, clinical and translational cancer research. “Our center is part of many studies researching novel therapies as well as the identification of biomarkers predictive of outcomes in cancer.”

..snip.. The research presented by the John Theurer Cancer Center will include advancements made in research and clinical trials in lymphoma, multiple myeloma, blood and marrow stem cell transplantation and leukemia.

Seven John Theurer Cancer Center physicians are first or senior authors, including Dr. Goy; Michele Donato, M.D., collection facility medical director, blood and marrow transplantation; Anthony Mato, M.D., oncologist, lymphoma; Joshua Richter, M.D., oncologist, multiple myeloma; Scott Rowley, M.D., chief, blood and marrow transplantation; David Siegel, M.D., Ph.D., chief, multiple myeloma; and David Vesole, M.D., Ph.D., co-chief and director of research, multiple myeloma.

John Theurer Cancer Center experts will also participate in panel discussions and moderate sessions. Dr. Siegel will present a complicated case at the International Hematologic Oncology Tumor Board during the Friday Satellite Symposium preceding the ASH Annual Meeting. In addition, Dr. Goy will moderate an oral and poster session featuring lymphoma chemotherapy.

“We are proud to contribute such a significant body of scientific research,” said Andrew L. Pecora, M.D., F.A.C.P., C.P.E., chief innovation officer, professor and vice president of cancer services, John Theurer Cancer Center. “We are thankful to the patients who entrust us and participate in our clinical trials, the physicians who lead this research at our institution, and the institutions we collaborate with to help us accelerate the development of novel and combination therapies.”

We love the LIGHTS being on!!!

Thanks to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) for all that you do to further innovative therapies and treat the entire patient with all options available. Dr. Barrie Cassieleth is an example of the new and innovative therapies MSKCC offers in addition to their unparalleled excellence in myeloma clinical trials.

"Dr. Cassileth is a world-renowned authority in integrative medicine. She is a researcher, educator, and planner who has worked in complementary (integrative) medicine and the psychosocial aspects of cancer care for more than 25 years. She has just released a new book, The Complete Guide to Complementary Therapies in Cancer Care. MSKCC’s Integrative Medicine Service’s Web site, http://www.MSKCC.org, offers evidence-based information about herbs, vitamins, and unproved cancer treatments at no charge to professionals and the public.
Integrative medicine combines modern scientific treatment with complementary therapies that can transform the physical, emotional, and spiritual lives of people living with chronic or life-threatening illness. Complementary therapies such as touch therapies, mind-body therapies, acupuncture, nutrition, and physical activity are not substitutes for mainstream medical care. But when used in concert with medical treatment, they alleviate stress; reduce pain, anxiety, and other physical and emotional symptoms; and enhance quality of life."
