Hello All Fellow Sufferers!
We made our great move from Johannesburg to our beloved Cape Town September last year.. We had to, needless to say, ditch our old team at the Donald Gordon Hospital and get connected up with a new team at the Constantiaberg Hospital. We went armed with all the test results since almost day one of diagnosis, plus a letter of introduction from the old doc to the new doc.
The new doc Mike is really on the ball. His first move was to reduce the thalidomide from 200 mg a day to 100 mg. That helped! He said that he has never normally prescribed more than 100 mg! He was very happy with the blood test results as the gains just get a bit better each time. The light chain counts are still all flat lined. So that was good!
Another visit a month later showed much the same, so doc Mike said the good news – no more thalidomide! So now I was free of meds and I also had had the first of the two cataracts removed but no lens implant, thanks to my rather severe kerataconus. Not a problem – I just saw the ophthalmic surgeon and optician. So better vision I had,
Saw doc Mike early December and he said your counts are great! Just see me in three months! Good plan that! I then had the left eye cataract done. Also no lens insert. But a little miracale – I could see far better with my left eye than I ever have! I could read my Kobo without aid! A bit close to the old conk, but, hey, I'm not complaining! I had a contact lens done for that eye too. Both lenses had to go back for little tweak jobs. Oh, they are gas permeable hard lenses.
We saw the good doc Mike on this past Friday and he was happy as a sandboy! Hemaglobin a tad down, but my platelets are the highest they have ever been! So we see him again in three months. One little plus is that I have no chromosomal abnormalities. That was one of the few the first doc actually did right!
Be Blessed!
