55 and new here - from New Zealand

by jet on Wed Feb 19, 2014 4:03 pm

Hi, just introducing myself :)

I'm 55 and I live in New Zealand where there are only around 300 cases of myeloma on a yearly basis. Reading around the Myeloma Beacon has provided me with a much wider view. Reading around i find the whole number-thing hard to figure out, maybe the measure in NZ is different to US :?

I have a lot of doubt around the SCT. I'm more interested in quality of life than quantity and the recovery time/risk/effects of SCT have me questioning if SCT is the answer for me.

At diagnosis in September 2013 my first hospital report said:

quite advanced Lambda type multiple myeloma
IgG 103
lambda 3470
renal impairment 207
Beta2microglobulin 22.3mg/l

Now, after 6 cycles of Velcade/dex/cyclophophamide:

IgG 15.9
lambda 198.8
renal normal
Beta2microglobulin - no current

Hi Jet,

So pleased to see someone else from NZ! I am from the SI where there is no multiple myeloma support group and, like you, was also diagnosed in September! I am 59 years old. I don't know anyone else with multiple myeloma either. Keep posting - we are not alone after all! :D

Hi Missy B

Sorry I completely missed your post! You are welcome to private message me.

There is a support group here in the Waikato, but I haven't attended any meetings so far :)

All the best

Hi my name is Lorraine and I am 60. I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2014. I completed all treatment , e.g. radiation (10 sessions) and chemotherapy (36 weekly sessions) as well as a stem cell transplant, in June of this year. I am now in the phase of life after treatment.

Welcome to the forum, Lorraine. I hope all is well with you now that you've completed your initial treatment and stem cell transplant. I also hope you have a very, very long remission!
