Re: 50 and newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma

by Eileenk on Sat Oct 21, 2017 9:32 am

Hi Doug,

I too feel like I am "drinking from a firehose" to gain more information on this crazy disease. I am still new to this process, I am currently smoldering, just a few months shy of 50, only discovered last month, but I find that it has taken over my life. Every thought is "what if", my free computer time has become "searching" and I count down the days until I go for my next bloodwork (which is in 10 days) to see how things are going.

I also had the Zometa, I found by that night I was achy with shortness of breath and for the next 2-3 days in bed with flu-like symptoms and fever. I took it to mean it was working :D

I hope your rash is healing and that you are feeling well. Keep us updated on your journey.

Hi Eileen,

Thank you for your note! I know what you mean about the 'what if's' - I am guilty of that as well!

The Zometa was not a problem for me thankfully, but on Friday my ankles swelled unexpectedly. It was a good day for it since it was also an office visit day so they pumped me with some Lasix (furosemid), gave me a break from the dex and Revlimid for a little bit, and as of this morning things are mostly back to normal. Even the rash has largely gone away.

I hope you are able to stay in the smoldering mode for a long time and keep it at bay. We will both be on this journey for a while, so I look forward to hearing from you and your progress as well!

Another update:

I have progressed well and had a successful stem cell harvest last week (21 million in one day!). I will go back next week to prep for the melphalan and stem cell transfer to begin on Groundhog day. Hopefully it will turn out better than Bill Murray's did!

Thank you again to all who share their experiences on this forum. I have been able to avoid a lot of things by learning from those who have come before me. I will be sure to update as things go!
