24-hour-urine test results - what do they mean?

by torimooney on Mon Nov 23, 2015 10:11 pm

I had a 24-hour urine immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) + protein electrophoresis

My results were as follows:

Total Protein - 13.6 mg/dl (Normal range 0-15)
Protein 24-hr calculated - 272 mg/24-hr (Normal 30-150)

How can one be normal and the other be nearly twice that of the high normal range? Is it because the volume of urine is greater than normal?

Also it reads:

Albumin, "No urine protein electrophoretic pattern was observed after concentration. However, there is a detectable amount of protein by quantitative spectrophotometric method"

Immunofixation result:

"An apparent normal immunofixation pattern."

It is my understanding that this 24-hour test should have included creatinine clearance and serum free light chains but these were not done for whatever reason even though the order included them. I believe the specific proteins were listed, including Bence Protein, on last year's report.

Can anyone shed some light on what these tests should include and what my results mean?

I don't see my oncologist for two months. I plan on going to the lab to verify the order and stir up trouble as to why they didn't follow the order. This is the second time I have gone in for the 24-hour tests and they were not done as ordered. Thankfully I only do this test once a year.
