My doctor just informed me I'll be getting a DEXA scan. From my understanding it just checks if I have any bone loss. Is that correct?

Yep. It measures only your bone density. The test will yield an overall "T score", which will tell you if you have normal bone density, osteopenia, or osteoporosis. The scan doesn't take much time and uses very little radiation.
