I just compared the Diagnosis section in the 2012 Abstract versus the updated 2013 Abstract.
The 2012 Abstract's link is http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22180161
2012: "DIAGNOSIS:
The diagnosis requires 10% or more clonal plasma cells on bone marrow examination or a biopsy proven plasmacytoma plus evidence of end-organ damage felt to be related to the underlying plasma-cell disorder."
to the 2013 Abstract http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23440663
2013: "DIAGNOSIS:
The diagnosis requires 10% or more clonal plasma cells on bone marrow examination or a biopsy proven plasmacytoma plus evidence of associated end-organ damage. In addition, the presence of 60% or more clonal plasma cells in the marrow is also considered as myeloma regardless of the presence or absence of end-organ damage."
If Bone Marrow Biopsies can sometimes be a "hit" or "miss" diagnostic tool, would the greater % levels (60% or more) always be found using this procedure? Does the "hit" or "miss" happen more often in the lower concentrations? The 2013 abstract no longer requires CRAB symptoms for an active multiple myeloma diagnosis if you have 60% or more PC in the marrow. Or is my understanding not correct?
