1q21 CKS1B gain: what to expect

by jlasiter on Fri Mar 16, 2018 12:46 pm

I have a gain of 1q21.3 in 80% of cells. From reading, it seems pretty bad. What can I expect?

Hi Jlasiter,

You don't mention what stage of disease you have (MGUS, smoldering or active myeloma).

A gain(1q21) is generally considered by some to be an intermediate risk factor for those with active myeloma. If you are smoldering, some believe that is also puts you at higher risk of progressing to active myeloma.

See the tables in the article referenced in this post:

https://myelomabeacon.org/forum/article-about-cytogenetics-chromosomal-abnormalities-t6271.html

You may also want to look at the mSMART guidelines put out by the Mayo:

https://www.msmart.org/mm-treatment-guidelines.html

But take the above articles as only data points from the Mayo. The descriptions of the potential impact of 1q gains on myeloma are somewhat mixed in the medical literature. See this article for a discussion on the matter:

Thank you for the links.

Just diagnosed with smoldering. 16% plasma involved. 1q21.3 gain 80% of cells. Some other mutations, but at 2%. My doctor says to ignore those.
