On May 18 the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) announced plans to collaborate with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard on a genetic analysis of multiple myeloma tumors. The MMRF, which is the financial sponsor of the project, will provide the patient samples for genomic sequencing of individual patient tumors. On May 12 the National Cancer Institute published an updated report on its ongoing study of industrial workers with high formaldehyde exposure. The findings indicate a possible link between high formaldehyde exposure and increased risk of cancers of the blood and lymphatic system, most notably Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and myeloid leukemia.

OICR Announces $2.25 Million In Funding Toward Cancer Research — On April 22, the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) announced that it would invest $2.25 million in five promising early-stage cancer technologies. One recipient of the award, Dr. Aaron Schimmer of the Princess Margaret Hospital Cancer Program in Toronto, has identified a proteasome inhibitor (5AHQ) that may be used to stop development of multiple myeloma tumors.
