Tylenol for Neupogen bone pain - dosage?

by goldmine848 on Tue Jan 14, 2014 10:23 am

Several posters on this forum have reported good results from using Tylenol [acetaminophen, paracetamol] to treat bone pain from Neupogen shots. I am curious what dosage has been successful for those who have tried it? I ask since there is continuing concern over the harm that can be caused by high dosages of Tylenol.

I took 2 capsules of Extra Strength Tylenol 2 times per day which came to 2000 mg per day. That is well within the safe dosage per day. You can ask your pharmacist what the upper limit of Tylenol dosage is. I think it's around 3000 mg per day, but it's been several years since I was at an inservice that reviewed drug dosing limits and safety.

If you need to take something for the bone pain from Neupogen shots, you will only be taking it for a couple of days at the most. My pain developed the last 2 days that I was doing the injections and was really only uncomfortable enough that I wanted pain medication for one day.

Thanks Nancy. You are correct that the new guideline is 3000mg. per day. Interestingly, since I posted this my nurse told me that i can take up to 8 extra strength capsules per day. I am assuming, like you suggested, since it will only be for a few days at the most the risk is negligible.

They actually gave my husband Oxycodone as needed, which he did take at night for 2 days. He had a lot of pain, but was collected Day 3 and Day 4. He took a pill on Day 3 and one on Day 4.

I tried Dilaudid, Morphine, and Oxycontin and they did not help much at all with the bone pain from Neupogen. What helped the most was using an anti inflammatory like Ibuprofen. The first time I took Ibuprofen the level 9 pain I was having nearly went away completley within two hours. I wished I had tried that first.

I have been cautioned against taking ibuprofen, naproxyn or aspirin because of the risk of internal bleeding.

I can't speak to Tylenol alone, but it is the only pain killer I can take normally and I don't think it would have been effective for me. I took hydrocodone / Tylenol [Vicodin] for 2 evenings and it worked for me.

The fact that this pain is short lived I see no reason to not address it aggressively with a strong pain killer as opposed to overdosing on a lesser, especially with everything that is going one with the SCT prep.

We found the best treatment for Neupogen bone pain to be Claritin (not Claritin D). Since we used it with good results, have recommended it to several other people at our clinic and they too had good results. It also works for some people for Zometa bone pain.

I don't think Motrin or Aleve are recommended with myeloma because of platelet issues.

I am currently going through the Neupogen shots (have had 5 days worth so far) and I started taking Claritin on day 1. So far I have had no bone pain. I have noticed a few minor aches (nothing that has lasted for more than a few seconds) but those don't sound anything like what other people have experienced. I have 2 more days of shots and then the harvest on Monday...hopefully I will make to Monday without any significant bone pain.

Edited later the same day as my above statements: Well, I thought I was going to dodge the bone pain bullet, but didn't. It came on this afternoon in the form of pain in my lower back and I started taking 2 regular strength tylenol and even thought the pain isn't completely gone, it's taking the edge off. So far it's bearable with the tylenol.
