European Commission Grants Marketing Authorization For Mozobil – On August 5, the European Commission granted marketing authorization for Mozobil in the European Union. Access to Mozobil will allow multiple myeloma patients who require a stem cell transplant a new option. The drug is used in combination with a granulocyte-colony stimulating factor which stimulates bone marrow, and together they increase the mobilization of stem cells to the bloodstream for collection and use in stem cell transplants. Sausalito Music Fan’s Bike Ride To Saratoga To Raise Money For MMRF – Cathy Gellis will be riding her bike from Sausalito, CA, to Saratoga, CA, to raise funds for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) and to see Huey Lewis and the News on August 15. She is riding in memory of Ron Stallings, a band member of the band who passed away earlier this year after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Prairie Pedal For Myeloma – The Prairie Pedal for Myeloma blog is written by Shane Saunderson. It follows his bike ride from Calgary to Toronto to raise funds for Myeloma Canada and the Molly and David Bloom Chair in Multiple Myeloma Research. For the first time, researchers have sequenced the full multiple myeloma genome.
Sequencing the full multiple myeloma genome enables scientists to discover which genes are present in a myeloma tumor, as well as to determine which genetic regions may harbor mutations. This knowledge will help researchers better understand both myeloma’s development -- how normal plasma cells in the bone marrow transform into cancerous ones – and new, tailored targets for attacking the disease.

Fill The House For LLS – On July 1, the Cleveland Indians baseball team is sponsoring a fundraiser event that will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). This event will take place at Progressive Field at 7 p.m, and the tickets will cost $16 if purchased from the LLS, otherwise $22. BiovaxID Vaccine Released in Europe - BiovaxID is a vaccine with the potential to treat B-cell blood cancers, such as multiple myeloma. BioVest International released this vaccine, currently used for follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, on a named-patient basis in Europe. A named-patient program allows qualifying patients to receive investigational drugs before being approved by the European Medicines Evaluation Agency. 20th Annual Gelatin Splash – On June 11 the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is holding an event to raise money for blood cancer research and patient aid services. The event will be held at Banchetti by Rizzo’s in Amherst, NY and will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. In the past 19 years, the LLS has raised over $1.4 million from this event. If participating in the gelatin splash, the suggested minimum of sponsorship money is $300. If attending without participating in the gelatin splash, admission is free.
