Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center To Field Questions At The Beacon's Forums This Week – Dr. William Bensinger, myeloma expert at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, WA, will be be responding to medical questions posted in the Myeloma Beacon's forums this week. Treanda Combination Therapy Enters Phase 1B/2 Trial For Multiple Myeloma – Last week, the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC) announced the start of a Phase 1B/2 clinical trial that will evaluate a combination of Treanda (bendamustine), Revlimid (lenalidomide) and dexamethasone (Decadron) in relapsed multiple myeloma patients. Treanda is already approved in Germany in combination with prednisone for the treatment of multiple myeloma. In the United States, the drug is approved for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and certain lymphomas.  For more information, see the MMRC press release or the clinical trial description.

MMRF Kicks Off Race For Research 5K Walk/Run Series – On April 25, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) will kick off its annual Race For Research 5K Walk/Run series to raise awareness and funds for multiple myeloma research. MMRF Grants Funding To Intellikine and Tragara Pharmaceuticals For Novel Myeloma Treatments – The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) announced last week that it will award Intellikine and Tragara Pharmaceuticals, two biotech companies based in Southern California, with $1 million each for the development of two new compounds for the treatment of multiple myeloma. Intellikine’s INK128 and Tragara Pharmaceuticals’ TG02 have both shown potential for multiple myeloma in pre-clinical studies. For more information, please see the MMRF press release.

5th Annual “Music Against Myeloma” Fundraiser To Be Held In NYC – On April 22, special musical performances will take place during the 5th annual “Music Against Myeloma” fundraiser to the benefit of the International Myeloma Foundation. MannKind Receives MMRF Grant For Development Of New Myeloma Treatment – The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) and MannKind, a biopharmaceutical company based in Valencia, CA, announced today that the MMRF will award MannKind $1 million for the development of a new compound for the treatment of multiple myeloma. The new compound, an IRE-1a inhibitor, inhibits growth of tumor cells, which may in turn make the cancer cells more susceptible to common myeloma treatments.  The award is based on results from nonclinical studies. The MMRF Holds Free Myeloma Symposium – On April 9, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) will hold a free educational symposium for multiple myeloma patients, their family members and caregivers about the latest advances and treatments in multiple myeloma. Dr. Ken Anderson Elected Officer To American Society Of Hematology – Dr. Ken Anderson is one of five newly elected officers to the American Society of Hematology’s (ASH) Executive Committee. Dr. Anderson is a renowned hematologist specializing in the treatment of multiple myeloma. He will begin serving his four-year term in January 2010. Revlimid Covered By Australian GovernmentRevlimid (lenalidomide) is now listed for the treatment of myeloma on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, a list of drugs subsidized by the Australian government. Potential New Myeloma Treatment Starts Phase 1 Trial Extension For AML – Innate Pharma received approval from the French Regulatory authorities to begin an extension of the Phase 1 trial with IPH 2101 in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). UAMS Receives $19.5 Million Grant For Multiple Myeloma Program – The Myeloma Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will receive $19.5 million over five years from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The grant is the fourth renewal of continuous funding from the NCI and will allow for continued research on myeloma and the development of new treatments. MMRF’s Fall Gala Raises Over $1.8 Million For Multiple Myeloma Research – The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) raised more than $1.8 million at its annual Fall Gala. FDA Requests Additional Information For Prolia Approval – Amgen Inc. announced on Monday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested additional information needed for the agency to complete its review of Prolia (denosumab).  Amgen has applied to the FDA to have Prolia approved for the treatment and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis.  In its recent information request, the FDA asked Amgen for all updated Prolia safety data as well as more details about Amgen's proposed post-marketing surveillance program for Prolia.  The Agency also informed Amgen that a new clinical trial program will be necessary for the FDA to be able to approve Prolia for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Prolia is currently being tested in multiple myeloma patients to see if it can delay skeletal events (see related Beacon article). For more information, please see the Amgen press release.

MMRF Fall Gala – On October 24, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) is hosting a Fall Gala at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich, CT. The MMRF will honor Hoda Kotb, co-host of “Today” and correspondent on “Dateline NBC,” with the Spirit of Hope Award for her efforts in advancing cancer awareness. New York City Marathon – On November 1, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Marathon team will run in the ING New York City Marathon.
