On March 26, U.S. Senators Edward M. Kennedy and Kay Bailey Hutchison introduced the 21st Century Cancer Access to Life-Saving Early detection, Research and Treatment (ALERT) Act, a comprehensive bill to address the broad issues that the nation faces in combating cancer. Since the National Cancer Act of 1971, this has been the first sweeping cancer legislation to be introduced.

Dress Down Day – The Northern New Jersey chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is asking that on April 3 businesses allow their workers to dress down in honor of blood cancer patients in Northern New Jersey. Participants are requested to donate a minimum of $10. Donations will go towards blood cancer research, patient care, and educational programs supported by the LLS. 3rd Annual Tom Burke 3-On-3 Basketball Games – On April 4, the Burke family is hosting this tournament to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in memory of Tom Burke. Myeloma UK Patient And Family Myeloma Infodays – Myeloma UK’s first Infoday session will be March 21 at the Apex International Hotel in Edinburgh. The information day begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes presentations, question and answer sessions, and opportunities for networking. Registration is required. Subsequent Infodays, each in a different city in the UK, will be held monthly from April to June and also in September, October and twice in November. The Leukemia Cup Regatta – This annual boating competition has raised funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) since its inception in 1988. This year there will be 36 boating regattas. Those occurring in March include: Mobile, AL, March 13-15 at the Buccaneer Yacht Club; Mandeville, LA, March 21-22 at the Pontchartrain Yacht Club; Punta Gorda, FL, March 21-22 at the Isles Yacht Club; and New Orleans, LA, March 28-29 at the New Orleans & Southern Yacht Clubs. Myeloma Awareness Month Educational Teleconference – The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is holding free teleconferences each Friday in March as part of the IMF Myeloma Awareness Month. The Waldenstrom's Award for lifetime achievement was presented to Brian G. M. Durie, M. D., last week for his many contributions to multiple myeloma research. The award is named for Professor Jan Waldenstrom, who was a pioneer in treating blood cancers, and was presented by the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) at the opening of the XII International Myeloma Workshop last week in Washington, D.C.
