D.C. Ride-a-thon – On August 1, Jim Barth, a multiple myeloma patient, will begin his ride on his scooter from Clearwater, FL to the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) Seminar in Washington, D.C. Ontario Approves Funding For Revlimid – On July 24 the Ontario government approved funding for Revlimid (lenalidomide) to be used with dexamethasone (Decadron) for multiple myeloma patients. This makes Ontario the second Canadian province to fund Revlimid, following British Columbia. Myeloma Canada is now urging other provinces to follow the examples set by the two provinces. Senesco Technologies Enters Agreement For $1 Million in Proceeds – On July 9, Senesco Technologies announced its purchase agreement with Partlet Holdings. Senesco, a biotechnology company in New Jersey, plans to use the money from proceeds to further develop its research in multiple myeloma. The anticipated $1 million funding will help fulfill Senesco’s goal of initiating a Phase 1 clinical trial for SNS01-T, a potential myeloma drug candidate. The IMF Joins Together With the Associazione Schirinzi A. Mario – The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) announced their new alliance with Associazione Schirinzi A. Mario, an association created to educate people in Italy by providing the latest news on multiple myeloma. The two organizations will share their resources to continue their fight against multiple myeloma and better serve the people in Italy who are affected by myeloma. Celgene Files For Approval Of Revlimid In Japan – On July 7, Celgene announced that it filed a New Drug Application (NDA) for Revlimid (lenalidomide) with the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare. The application seeks approval for the use of Revlimid in combination with dexamethasone (Decadron) for myeloma patients who have received at least one previous therapy. The filing is based on the results of two large Phase 3 trials from 2007 that demonstrated the efficacy of this treatment regimen. Phase 1 trials with Japanese patients show similar results and also support the NDA. Revlimid is approved in almost 50 countries for the treatment of multiple myeloma. 99th Annual Wamp Swim-a-Thon – On July 18, the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is sponsoring a swim-a-thon to benefit the Jeffrey R. Stafford fund at the IMF, used to benefit patients suffering from multiple myeloma. Currently, participants have raised around $100,000 and produced three research grants to aid in research about multiple myeloma. The fund is in honor of Jeffrey Stafford, who was diagnosed with myeloma in 2001. For more information, please visit the IMF Web site.

The Access to Cancer Clinical Trials Act of 2009 was introduced to the Senate on February 26. Clinical trials play a critical role in developing new treatments for many types of cancer, including multiple myeloma. Participation in these trials may also lead to more favorable outcomes for cancer patients.
Currently, group and individual health insurance issuers and group health plans may decide not to cover routine services in clinical trials that they cover in standard therapy under the premise that clinical trials are experimental treatments.

Cultural Competency At The Bedside: Breaking Down Barriers To Cancer Care – On April 23, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and the National Cancer Institute will be holding an educational program on cultural competency for nursing professionals and social workers. The program will be held at Baruch College in New York City and runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Topics to be discussed include cancer occurrence in different ethnic groups, cultural viewpoints and values, financial difficulties, and helping patients find direction in dealing with cancer care. Dental Health During Cancer Treatments – CancerCare is sponsoring an educational teleconference workshop on April 24 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET. Professionals will discuss dental issues and wellness during cancer treatments. Questions are welcomed and encouraged. Boston Marathon — Registration for the 2009 Boston Marathon on April 20 has already closed, but those who are interested in racing or sponsoring entries for multiple myeloma research may attain a charity entry through the MMRF or the IMF. The MMRF requires an online application and a fundraising minimum of $5000. The IMF is sponsoring the Marathon for Mom, which is asking for donations in honor of Gail Pollard, a patient who was recently diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The Road To Discovery: Emerging Therapies In Blood Cancers — The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) will host a free patient education program on April 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. The program will discuss how new drugs are discovered, researched, and approved for treatment; recent and ongoing advances in the treatment of blood cancers; and participation in clinical trials as a possible treatment option. IMF San Francisco Patient & Family Seminar – On April 17 and 18 the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) will be hosting an informational seminar at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco. The seminar will run from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on April 17 and 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on April 18. Topics discussed include managing side effects, an overview of myeloma, and current therapies, among others. Registration for the seminar is required and the cost per person ranges from $30 to $60. 100th Annual Meeting Of The American Association For Cancer Research – The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) will be holding its 100th Annual Meeting April 18-22 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Desert International Triathlon – The 10th Annual Toyota Desert International Triathlon will be held on April 19 at Lake Cahuilla in La Quinta, CA.
