The annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the European Hematology Association (EHA) took place earlier this month. The two meetings were attended by tens of thousands of physicians from around the world, and featured a myriad of oral presentations, posters, and e-abstracts summarizing the results of new oncology- and hematology-related research.

The presentation summarized early results of a pilot clinical trial being conducted at the University of Pennsylvania. The trial, which is scheduled to enroll 10 relapsed myeloma patients, is testing a promising approach to cancer treatment known as “chimeric antigen receptor” (CAR) T-cell therapy.

Updated results of a key Phase 1/2 trial testing the potential new myeloma therapy daratumumab were released this morning. The new results confirm previous research indicating that single-agent daratumumab has notable activity as a multiple myeloma therapy.
Specifically, the results show that nearly one third of the trial participants – who had received a median of five prior therapies – responded to single-agent daratumumab. The median time to disease progression was 3.7 months, and the estimated one-year overall survival rate was 65 percent.
