Pat’s Place: Everyday Things That Inspire Me

I don’t often write what could be called “feel good stories.”
But life is about balance. I get so caught-up in trying to help multiple myeloma patients and caregivers get a handle on their “new normal” lives, I forget how important it is for all of us to just try to stay positive—and inspiration can definitely help with that.
Different things inspire different people. For me, it’s the small, seemingly insignificant everyday things that move me the most. These are things that help me carefully roll out of bed each morning, even though I know I’m going to be faced with a lot of pain and other challenges.
I would like to share with you now a few of the things that inspire me:
I am inspired by my fellow support group members, who show-up at meetings despite feeling sick or tired. It doesn’t matter if the news they share is good or bad. Connecting with others who understand what I am going through always leaves me feeling energized and uplifted.
I am inspired each and every time I visit our local infusion center. Watching so many cancer patients steadfastly enduring chemotherapy, with resolve and dignity, helps me convince myself that I can do it too.
Oncology nurses inspire me. The definition of the phrase ‘oncology nurse’ in Webster’s Dictionary should simply be ‘angel.’
I am inspired by my readers and their heart-felt comments every week. Thank you!
I am inspired by my friends who teach. What an important, yet thankless job. As a former teacher and coach, I understand how difficult teaching can be. Toss in uncertainties caused by budget cuts and state-mandated curriculum requirements, and I’m not sure how they do it.
A simple smile can mean so much, can’t it? Just when I think common courtesy is dead, a shopper at Target or Home Depot will smile and nod as they pass by, leaving me feeling good about my community.
Smiles are a way we can connect with each other. When a busy med tech or staffer at the front desk slows down a moment to share a smile and ask a simple question or two, it means so much. I wonder if they realize just how much. Maybe if they did, everyone might make more of an effort to connect.
Natural beauty always inspires me. Viewing a sunset or full moon makes it easier to keep walking, even if I don’t feel like moving on.
Watching the news can be so unsettling these days. But buried deep beneath the sensationalized headlines are stories of quiet determination, loyalty, and commitment. The inspiration is always there—we just have to look for it.
Next week I would like to give a shout-out to some of the specific people who inspire me and help me keep fighting the good fight.
Until then, feel good and keep smiling! Pat

Reading between the lines, Pat, it sounds like you are going through a particularly tough time. I'm sorry.
It's at these times that rehearsing my list of blessings helps the most: My husband, always there; my great doggy, the beautiful U.P. where we live, and seven children and 13 grandchildren. And especially that God knows and cares.
As to people who inspire me, you are definitely one of them. Thanks for the good work you do in keeping us in touch - especially those of us in rural places where there are virtually no other myeloma patients.
God bless you, Julia
Hi Pat,
I would like to say a big "Thank You" for all of the information that you pass along to the MM family and caregivers. I follow your blogs and also your articles for the Beacon. They have been a big help to me as I search for the next step in my husband's treatment. Your article today reminded me that I need to be thankful for all the wonderful people who share their information and tips to get through this new normal that our lives have now taken on. Now, if we only had the power to get some of these new drugs out to help MM suffers, we would have it made!! Thanks again for all you do and the very best wishes and prayers as you take this new road to beat this MM beast.
Jan
