Hello to everyone,
My Dad, 75, has been newly diagnosed with myeloma. I have been reading the forums and am amazed and heartened by the wonderful advice and knowledge people have been passing on.
My husband lost his father to melanoma 5 years ago. So, needless to say, I am a mess. His doctor has been blaming his back / leg pain on sciatica for years. I explained to my Dad that sciatica doesn't present in the way that his symptoms were and he got an MRI, which was all clear, somewhere around last summer.
However, an x-ray last fall revealed some significant bone demineralization. His doctor failed to make the myeloma link, but the x-ray tech was suspicious and referred him to a hematologist. She made the diagnosis from the blood tests alone, and he said that she said they manage myeloma "like diabetes.." He was scheduled for a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) last Monday and he asked her if he should go ahead with it, and she responded "Of course!" All went fine on that front.
He has since had a series of x-rays from head to food and high protein markers in his blood. Also a somewhat low hemoglobin. His organs are fine. He has had his bone marrow sample taken and we will find out the results next week with his initial meeting with his oncologist.
Navigating the minefield of myeloma drugs is very intimidating. My Dad has had no other health issues his whole life except for the prostate issue.
