Change of course in treatment

by paimeg on Mon Mar 05, 2012 10:00 pm

Hello everyone, first post here. First of all, I wanted to say hello and give my wholehearted greetings to those carrying this illness. It is my sincere wish that you recover hastily and completely.

My close relative has recently been diagnosed with multiple myeloma (Jan 2012). I've been visiting the beacon almost on a daily basis and learning about this illness. His treatment is a little bit special as he lives in a part of world where Velcade has not been accessible. He just finished his second cycle of treatment using a combination of Doxorubicin, Dexamethasone, and VDS(Vindesine). The results have been satisfactory, but not optimal. I wanted to ask all the experts here, how effective is this combination of drugs?

Recently, Velcade has been made available and he's at a cross road right now. We are uncertain as to continue with the current course of treatment (2 more cycles of the previously mentioned drugs) or change the course of treatment and be treated with bortezomib, thalidomide and dexamethasone.

The person (63 y/o male) is newly diagnosed and this is his initial treatment. Would really appreciate any input on this topic.
