Hmm. No replies yet? Expect it depends more on your numbers, etc and is a great question for your doc. Anything would be third hand from me. See Pat Killingsworth's columns here at the Beacon describing his experience at Moffitt.
Re: Allogeneic Transplants - how long do you stay?
My husband received two transplants at UAMS. Both times we planned for a 4-week stay. I would plan on a 4-week visit, and barring any side effects or complications, it is possible to be released a bit sooner than that. It takes about two weeks for recovery after the transplant--again, counts may recover quicker. Everyone is different, so there's no rule of thumb. At any rate, 4-weeks should be ample time. Good luck, and God bless!

I forgot to add to my previous post that my husband was treated as an outpatient.

Mama4242,
Are you sure your husband didn't have an autologous transplant (his own cells)?

I am so sorry......you are absolutely right! I guessed I scanned your question as opposed to truly reading--my husband did indeed have a stem cell transplant using his own cells. Well, sorry I was of no help whatsoever. Hopefully someone else will be able to help you. Good luck! God bless!

Re: Allogeneic Transplants - how long do you stay?
Ruminating,
I did an Allogeneic transplant as soon as I achieved my first Remission. I did what would be considered a myeloablative Allo. I stayed 29 days in the Hospital. Most Allos are not done with that high intensity of conditioning. The typical stay for a Reduced Intensity Conditioning Allo would be less than mine. I had email correspondence with a lady that told me she was planning on doing a RIC and that it was planned to done as outpatient with admission to the hospital only if a problem occurred.
I also did mine at a transplant center that is about a 45 minute drive from my home. From what I understand patients that do Allos stay for about 90 days or so in the area they did their transplant. It really depends on the type of conditioning regimine being used and if the patient experiences bad side effects. Mine went very smoothly. I actually had worse side effects from my Induction regimine of Velcade/Doxil/Dex than I did after my hospital stay from my Allo - so you never know each patient will respond.

I had an autologus transplant, I spend 26 in the pod, travel from Florida to Danna Farber in Boston, it is critical that you put together a team of Doctor's local where you leave for followup and maintenance. In total I spend 45 days in Massachusetts with minimum complications.

Re: Allogeneic Transplants - how long do you stay?
Hello from rainy Seattle,
One should generally expect to be living with 30-60 miles of the transplant center for at least 3 months during an allogeneic stem cell transplant. The patient can live at home, at the transplant center's apartments(if they have them), a nearby hotel or at a friends or family members home but you must be at most 60 miles from the transplant center. Here in Seattle patients need to be within 30 minutes of the center (with or without traffic). The reason for the need to be close to the transplant center is that if a transplant patient becomes ill we want our transplant doctors to be caring for the patient.....NOT inexperienced physicians at an outside hospital. The complications of allotransplantation are unique and very few doctors are qualifed to care for patients in the early stages of a transplant.
Allo transplants can be performed largely as an outpatient in 2012 although you can expect spend at least a couple of weeks in the hospital early in the process. If complications occur patients are often hospitalized sometimes for long periods.
Best of luck in all things !
