Re: I'm really itchy

Update. My husband had his auto transplant on Oct 7th. For the last month he has had ITCHY, red bumps on his head, face, and back. They continue to pop up. He had a punch biopsy of one of the bumps, done by the dermatologist. The pathologist who read it had even done a paper on post auto transplant rashes! My husband's bx. was consistent with a drug reaction. However, he stopped all his meds a couple of weeks ago, and has done 4 cycles of prednisone, and he is still developing new spots every day, and the itching is driving him crazy. The dermatologist has no other ideas. He goes back to Mayo next week for his 60 day post transplant check up. Any other ideas out there as to what is causing him to feel so miserable. He would feel totally normal if it weren't for the itching.

Hi,I was diagnosed by multiple myeloma last December 2012. My paraprotein is 60% but all my bones , kidney etc is still good - no damage at all , that's why my haematologist still postpone my chemo. But it has been 2 months, my skin is really itchy - all my hands and my body....
I don't know what medicine I should take as my GP doesn't know neither.
Maybe someone could share her/ his experience to overcome this itchy ???
Thank you for this forum.....at least I know that i'm not alone.......
whatever is not killing me...just make me stronger......

Shining Little Star,

Sorry to hear about your problems.

EJ had an episode several months ago where he developed a systemic itch. It started with a really bad gas bubble that seemed to get lodged under his diaphragm. Then he started itching everywhere, but couldn't scratch or relieve the itch. He went to his GP, and they ran some tests. His liver function tests were all elevated. They did an ultrasound of his liver, and it looked fine, but before we could proceed any further, the whole thing resolved itself.

My (very limited) understanding is that liver issues can cause the kind of systemic itching EJ had, and that some drugs like statins for high cholesterol, or some OTC meds could be the culprit.

Not sure if that helps, but thought I'd pass it along.

My Dad is having this itchy problem at the moment. He did the stem cell collection about five months ago. The cyclophosphamide wiped out most of his body hair, making him significantly weaker to cough and flu, and triggered his dormant hepatitis B.

Liver Doc gave him Tenofovir 300mg, and soon after that he's having terrible rash and itch. The Doc change the meds to 0.5mg Entecavir (Baraclude). After a week, the rash and itch continue. We tested his kidney (creatinine and ureum) and liver functions, and they were all normal (thank God). He then stopped the meds for two days, and then the rash and itchi got better.

multiple myeloma doc said that his blood works may look normal, but in reality, his immune system is compromised due to the chemo. Allergy is basically a weird reaction of your immune system, and I think for some of us, so-called normal meds can trigger this allergy. Winter lotions always help with the rash and itch.

I hope this helps.
