My husband had his last round of Velcade, Rev. & Dex the end of July. He had been bothered with leg pain and alot of tenderness to the point of not wanting anything to touch them now. When he straightens his legs out in bed at night, they get tremors. Today he came in from driving to the store and was upset because he said he had trouble pressing the brake pedal in his truck. This is starting to really scare me. He is having his SCT the end of Sept.. Is there anyone on here who's been through this?

I have had these issues. Check potassium levels. Eat Bananas. Neuopthy maybe coming on. Side effect of Velcade. It is manageable, Talk to Doctor. The chemo depletes several different counts in your system. Not to worry.

Re: Leg tenderness, weakness and spasms
Hi. My name is Joanne. I have been on Revlimid/dexo for a year now. Tonight is my last night. It has done me wonders. It has kept all my levels good. The bad thing is the severe leg cramps. I have noticed that they have gotten worse. I know how your husband feels. They have given me all kinds of creams and meds and nothing has helped. I am even on potassium and that doesnt help. There are days when I am able to sleep or go through the day without the cramps and there are days when they are excrutiating and last for days. My poor husband jolts out of bed when those spasms hit and rubbing doesnt help. Like I tell my doc, the pain just means I am alive. I hope now that I am being taking of the rev/dexo they subside, but we will see. God Bless.

Re: Leg tenderness, weakness and spasms
Oh yes, I have had the same problems....My legs would be so sensitive sometimes that even rubbing lotion on them hurt. And the cramps are awful. Cramps in my legs, feet , arms, back, and even my neck. Right now I am off Velcade/Dex-just doing Revlimid, but still have the tenderness and cramps.

Thanks for your replies. He is currently taking potassium and tries to eat a banana daily. I really think he's just lost muscle mass due to the lack of exercise also. After the SCT, maybe physical therapy can be of some help.

Re: Leg tenderness, weakness and spasms
Dear Karen,
The symptoms that your husband is experiencing are quite convincing for bortezomib (Velcade)-induced peripheral neuropathy. Does he have numbness and/or the sensation of pins and needles in his toes/soles of his feet as well? The good news is that if this is peripheral neuropathy, it should improve now that he is off Velcade. In the meanwhile, there are medications that can help take the edge off the pain, such as neurontin, lyrica, and cymbalta to name some of the more commonly used ones. I would touch base with your husband's oncologist to better determine if this is Velcade-induced neuropathy, and, if so, what you can do to help his symptoms. Hang in there. It should get better, but it is going to take time. Be patient and good luck!

Re: Leg tenderness, weakness and spasms
What do people think about Cymbalta for neuropathy?? How long after starting taking it should I feel some releif ?? I just started taking it yesterday..
Re: Leg tenderness, weakness and spasms
Dr. Voorhees,
Thank you for your response. Terry started Neurontin on weds. and is starting to feel better. We were hoping it was Velcade induced and may be a short term thing.
Ken, my husband was on Cymbalta for 2 weeks. He tolerated the 30 mg. OK but when he went to the 60 mg. dose, his blood pressure shot up and it made him really sick. I have heard good results from other people though. Good Luck to you.

Re: Leg tenderness, weakness and spasms
I had that too. I was on Velcade and thalidomide. Went to Velcade once a week and Revlimid and that sensation went away. I just punched my thigh to make sure. All gone. Been on Velcade for 9 months. Been in remission for 4 months. Got 3 more months to go then just Revlimid for life. Not having any transplant.
