Velcade
Hi. My Mum was diagnosed with Myeloma 2 years ago. She has been on Thalidomide for about 6 months now and we're been told it's stopped working. She gets her first Velcade treatment today and I don't really understand why she has to have bloods taken the day before each treatment. Is this to see if the treatment is working or is to check for something before she gets the treatment. She's 77 and I am really worried about how the treatment will affect her. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Velcade
Velcade along with other chemo's can lower the blood counts (white, red, platelets & etc)
If the counts are too low treatment may be withheld and/or platelets, procrit, neupojen may be given to build the counts back up to acceptable range.

Re: Velcade
Many thanks - worrying time as she is very frail but trying to stay positive and hoping the treatment helps.
