Benzene and multiple myeloma

by Ed on Thu Mar 24, 2011 9:22 am

Here is the one million dollars question: does benzene have anything to do with multiple myeloma? Does anyone in the forum heard about it? I have at least 3 reputable doctors asking me if I was ever exposed to benzene, off the record they talked.

Benzene is a known carcinogen. If you do a web search for "benzene myeloma" you'll come up with all kinds of webpages suggesting that benzene exposure may cause myeloma. If you've had significant exposure to benzene, I would guess it significantly contributed to you developing myeloma. It might not be the only reason.

Ed,

The Myeloma Beacon did an article a couple of years ago on the issue of myeloma and benzene. Here's a link to the article:

https://myelomabeacon.org/news/2008/11/20/long-term-exposure-to-benzene-may-increase-risk-of-multiple-myeloma/

I think it fair to say that there is generally the belief that exposure to petroleum-derived products and many other classes of chemicals can increase the risk of developing multiple myeloma. Here are other related Myeloma Beacon articles that you may find useful:

Good luck!

- Boris.

I was an auto mechanic for 35 years in the grease and oil every day. Could be? At least that is what the doctor tells me where I get treatment.
