What is the consensus on posture support straps? I found a ITA-MED Co. Medium Posture Corrector (Thoracic Lumbo Sacral Orthosis) with Flexible Stays http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WFY4GO/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Is this a good for a multiple myeloma patient who has limited mobility and suffered from fractured back?

bshrestha: My husband is almost in remission, but he has a Compression Fracture in the L1, and is in excruciating pain much of the time. His Hemoc has experimented with various drugs, none of which seem to help. Yesterday, he was measured and fitted for a custom back brace which is supposed to give support and help his spine bear the weight of his frame.
It's too early to know if this will do the trick, but we're certainly hoping that it helps to give him some relief. It would be great if he could discontinue some of the pain killers, which aren't helping much.

What are his symptoms? My husband has severe shooting pain in his left femur and all around it the thigh is numb. They keep xraying the femur and there is no lesion there. I'm wondering if my husband might have a compression fracture. Hope the brace does the trick for your husband!

Barb: Bob's pain is just below his waist in the "small" of his back and into his buttocks, and can be on either side. It then travels down his thigh and into his shins.
If the thighs hurt, his shins aren't always in pain ....and vice versa. His feet don't hurt, and he has no neuropathy in either his hands or feet.

Sarah: My husbands pain is starting to subside and he was able to get off the narcotics over the weekend. We are guessing his chemo is shrinking his lesions in his lower back and ribs. He is currently on vincristine/doxil/dex. He just had his 2nd treatment (which they give once every 4 weeks by IV) last Monday.

We are back in the hospital (with the pain) since late Thursday night. A Pain Management Specialist has been called in, and thinks the problem is from degenerative facet joints. He will start injections this Friday (Bob has to be off Plavix for 5 days) to begin killing the nerves.
According to the PMS, his genetic makeup is preventing him from responding to the MS Contin and the Fentanyl Patches.
His Oncologist also thinks that the Velcade may be contributing to the pain, so that is being discontinued. He will continue with the Dex, so that the multiple myeloma doesn't get out of hand, even though the Dex weakens the bones.

BTW, the back brace does help to give support .....but really does nothing to relieve the pain.
