Hello,
Is it possible that urinary tract infections (2 cystitis in two month) are signs of myeloma progression?
Cordially,

Re: Urinary infections as sign of myeloma progression?
Hello Jacqueline, I think that this depends on where you are as a patient. If you are not on myeloma medications, then infections could mean that your immune system is struggling to fight off infections, be they caused by bacteria (such as UTI's) or viruses. Then this could be a sign that your cancer is increasing.
Or if you are already taking medications, they could be suppressing your immune system too. In that case, the medications could still be effective agains the myeloma. Your doctor might reduce the dosage, or give you a break from chemotherapy in that case.
Either way , you should report it to your doctor. The infections may correlate to your blood tests, as in the white cell blood counts. Hope that helps!

Thank you Nancy,

Re: Urinary infections as sign of myeloma progression?
Hi Jacqueline,
My mother's didease pregressed recently so she was moved from Revlimid, Velcade and dexamethasone regimen to Kyprolis, Revlimid, and dexamethasone. I remember that her urine culture report also showed that she had urine infection. At that time i thought it could be a coincidence, but now it seems it could be due to suppressed immune system as her disease progressed.

Re: Urinary infections as sign of myeloma progression?
I saw my hematologist (a professor) this past Tuesday. For him, urinary tract infections are not related to gammopathy. These are coincidences. And the disease is stable.
It is an anxiety of less!
Thank you for your answers,

Re: Urinary infections as sign of myeloma progression?
Hello,
My multiple myeloma was diagnosed due to chronic infections, mostly sinus infections and urinary tract infections, but also some serious skin infections. I had hypogammaglobulinemia and neutropenia before I even started treatment. I was able to go two years with just IVIG for treatment and I had no infections during that time, but when my disease progressed and I started other treatments, my infections came back. I'm on Darzalex now and it's my understanding that it exacerbates the likeliood of infection. I have been on antibiotics 2x in 3 months for urinary tract infections.
Best,
J
