Hello all,
I've been lurking and quietly observing for the last few months. Like many others who I have read about here, I was completely blindsided by this multiple myeloma diagnosis, which I got in June of 2017. I was having back pain as well as pain in my right leg that made it almost unbearable to walk for more than 10 minutes before needing to sit.
After a bit of online research, I thought that I was suffering from sciatica and began seeing a chiropractor in hopes of rectifying the issue. He sent me to have x-rays done, and it was at that point that the doctors saw the initial indicators of multiple myeloma.
The next month or two following the diagnosis are kind of a blur. From the onset, my doctors have been very optimistic based on the fact that I have no other health issues and I'm fairly young. Thankfully, I've taken to treatment very well with no side effects to speak of, and according to my oncologist, my numbers have decreased dramatically in relation to where I started.
I am now scheduled for a bone marrow transplant in January 2018.

Hi Nate,
Good luck with your transplant and keep us posted! I am not too far behind you and I hope to have a stem cell transplant as soon as I can next year. Multiple myeloma has made an unwelcome entrance to both of our lives, but I am hopeful we can come out on top!

Hey Doug,
Thanks for the well wishes. Hopefully, all goes as planned and in a few months I'll be cruising comfortably down Remission Road, lol. I will certainly keep you guys in the loop as it pertains to my progress. It's comforting to read about the experiences of others who are enduring the same hurdles as myself.

My husband was diagnosed when he was 47, in 2015. He, too, had back pain that eventually led to his diagnosis.
He was given Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone. His only problem with that treatment was he did have pain in his legs and peripheral neuropathy that is common with Velcade. He did not get those effects until toward the end of the treatment, and it lasted for about 6-8 months after. He has lost some of his reflexes due to nerve damage (we can live with that). There is a thread here in the forum with information about a study looking into the timing of dexamethasone and Velcade to reduce peripheral neuropathy.
My husband had his stem cell transplant at a center about 1 hour from where we live, so we had to live near the center for about a month. He did his outpatient. It went well; no major incidents.
It did seem to take him longer than I would think to "recover," and by that I mean he was tired, etc. It took a while for his hair to grow back in. Now, however, he is doing great. Our lives are "normal".

I am 47 and the doctors said that I was very young (though no better off living for 20 years and still dying before someone who contracted the disease at age 65 but only lived for 5 years).
Have completed the stem cell harvest and should be admitted for the transplantation within the next 2-4 weeks. So I should be able to offer you my views on the experience.
