Just got the multiple myeloma results today

by bj4dixie on Tue Sep 12, 2017 10:14 pm

My husband just turned 65 and thought he had another (3rd time) torn rotator cuff. So we went and had an MRI and the orthopedic surgeon said he wouldn't touch him as he had a large tumor on his shoulder blade. He sent us to Houston to see an ortho / oncologist.

More tests, more blood work. They took a bone marrow sample of his shoulder and said they thought it was a plasmacytoma but sent him back for another sample out of his hip several weeks later. So we just left the doctor's office and he wants to be very aggressive with this, actually wanted us to go to the myeloma center at M.D. Anderson. He believes we should do a myeloma treatment regimen for several months and then go to Houston for a stem cell transplant. Said he'd be in the hospital 3 to 4 weeks.

Naturally, this floored us. We were expecting to just shoot some radiation into his shoulder and we'd be done. Stupid us!

We have always treated ourselves naturally and ate good and taken plenty of vitamins and herbs. We always said, "We'd never do chemo." Well, I guess until it happens to you or your significant other, you just don't know.

So we begin the journey today and hope by reading the many posts here we will be able to figure this multiple myeloma out!

Just a heads up, make sure the treating haematologist knows all the natural supplements your husband is on before he starts treatment for his multiple myeloma, as there are various supplements that may interfere with myeloma treatment regimens, e.g. green tea-based supplements and Velcade (bortezomib).
