Use of Interferons for multiple myeloma therapy

by Kay on Sat May 05, 2012 2:00 pm

I see in my various readings that Interferon Alphas were used in multiple myeloma therapy. I have been wondering for some time if my qod injections of Interferon Beta 1b for Multiple Sclerosis could have any affect on my dx of MGUS. I do have a skewed K/L ratio and moderate kidney disfunction.

Thanks, Kay

Hello from Groningen Netherlands !
I am in Groningen for an Amyloidosisi meeting.

Yes, interferon has been used in myeloma but there were two problems:
#1. for many patients the use of interferon is associated with signfiicant side effects
#2. Interferon was never shown to be very effective in myeloma
Therefore there is little going on in terms of research in the use of inteerferons for myeloma, MGUS or SMM at this time. Thank you for asking this interesting question Kay.
