So I'm sure anytime anyone is diagnosed with cancer, you look most for success stories to kinda ease any pain and give hope, so that's why I have decided to write.
My spouse was diagnosed with stage 3 multiple myeloma at age 27. Every doctor he encounters call him an anomaly, frankly because of his age and his protein mutating into something called cryoglobulinemia. He didn't fracture a bone or have any of the usual symptoms except for this. His body, when it was exposed to cold, would shut down and he would begin to have streaks of white around his body. In other words, his blood would coagulate, freak out, and he would get no oxygen to his brain or lower extremities nor hands.
They first diagnosed him with Raynaud's disease, which has all the same similarities, but it turned out to be something way serious.
He has done 1 cycle of cyclophosphamide, Velcade, and dexamethasone (CyBorD), and is going to start Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone (RVD) pretty soon depending on what the results of the chemo he is doing. He is scheduled to do an autologous stem cell transplant in April 2016 that has given not much hope. The stem cell transplant physician was realistic with us and states that the cancer would come back in less than 5 years due to the aggressive nature of the myeloma and also recently finding out from a genetics test that his mutated another chromosome, making it even more dangerous. We were told the cancer will return with the transplant and would have to do another and over time his body will not be able to handle it.
In other words, WE have been super positive, and he makes light of the situation with jokes that I can't handle times, but it is his nature to joke. I think I really am writing because I'm interested to know how many people relapsed after the transplant, or have survived from an autologous transplant, to give him some hope.
I would really appreciate it and I know if he was reading this he would want everyone to know that he is active duty military with 2 tours in Afghanistan, and he is also a very proud Texan!
We have so much support at home and WE thank you in advance for any advise at all! Happy New year to all!
