Failed SCT?

by Christa's Mom on Sat Sep 03, 2011 11:41 am

I'm hoping that someone can provide me with a little guidence. I'm not sure what to make of this.

EJ just received the results of his blood tests, 24-hour urine, and x-rays taken two months post SCT. They show that he still has an m-spike of .4. The doctor is going to repeat the tests in six weeks, which will put him just over the 100 day mark for his SCT. I was a little surprised the doc performed the tests so soon after his SCT. I was under the impression that up until day 100 the numbers jumped around a bit and it was hard to get a good read on the status of the myeloma.

Is all of this a sign of a failed SCT? Should I be worried?

Lyn-
What are the units for EJ's m-spike. Is it 4 or 0.4? My oncologist ordered the full panel of blood tests every time I saw him after my transplant. My numbers really didn't start to improve until well over the 100 day mark. At about 8 months my m-spike was non-detectable. It took a while longer for my free lite ratio to come into the normal range. Now, 19 months post transplant all of my blood test results are within the normal range except for the appearance of the m-spike again at 0.6. Although this has returned, it also is staying fairly stable.

Don't get too panicky yet. EJ is still fairly early in his recovery from the transplant. Each person's body takes their own time to respond to the treatment. Although 100 days is supposed to be the magic number, it isn't always so for everyone.

Sending EJ lots of healing energy and you the faith that things will improve,

Nancy,

Thank you so much for your encouraging words! They really helped put both me and EJ at ease. Hopefully his numbers will continue to trend downward.

I would totally agree with Nancy that the numbers may take awhile to come down after transplant. Rex still showed low M spike after transplant - but finally this last round of tests last week showed no presence. His transplant was latter part of October last year. Patience and prayer!! Best wishes. Rex and Kay

Just wanted to post an update - just got news today that 7 months post transplant, EJ's m-spike is finally down to 0! Yeah!!!!

Since his SCT EJ has been doing great. He returned to work within about 8 weeks of his SCT and its been good ever since. To look at him, you would not know that he has cancer. The doctor even told him he could go skiing again if he wants to. I'm not sure I'm on board with that, but we'll see.... Just happy that he's doing so well.

Great news about EJ!!!!! He should do everything that he feels comfortable doing. Life is short with, or without, multiple myeloma.
