Hello,
My mother is the one who may have multiple myeloma. Today we went to see the oncologist; they took blood and urine and said it will be back in 2 weeks. 2 weeks seems like an eternity. Does it really take that long? I looked at some of her initial levels, and they don't seem that far off.
What is the prognosis without chemo and radiation? She stated she does not want that.

I am sorry to hear that your mother may have multiple myeloma. She must be injured that she may need radiation?
Chemotherapy for myeloma would be infinitely better than letting the disease run its course unimpeded. Many times, the disease can be halted and put into a remission. She might be surprised at how tolerable the treatments could be for multiple myeloma. If you would like more detailed advice, you could post more information about her situation also.

Thank you, Nancy. We are in a holding pattern until the tests come back; 2 weeks seems so long.
My mom is frail. That is why she is concerned about chemo. She also feels she has lived a good life. I am working on her to consider it.

Sorry to hear about your mom's diagnosis.
Your mom may think be thinking that the treatment involved in multiple myeloma is like some of the old-school chemo that many of us have seen cancer patients suffer through. You may want to read this thread and note Dr. Libby's comments. This might help ease her fears:

2 weeks does seem like a long time. I go to a cancer center and the CBC blood counts are returned within the hour. The 24-hour urine lab results and the blood lab results to measure SPEP (Serum Protein Electrophoresis, showing serum albumin, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta globulins, gamma globulins), Immunoglobulin results, and Kappa & Lambda Quant Free Light Chains are posted on the Patient Portal within 4 days.
Your Mom's blood test results may be back in the doctor's office but the 2-week wait may be for an appointment for the doctor to review them with you. Just a thought.
